An eBook is an electronic version of a printed book. eBooks can be viewed online from any computer connected to the Internet. The look exactly like the original - page for page, word for word, including all the illustrations. Because eBooks are online, they're available at your convenience - anywhere, anytime.
The Harris County Public Library's NetLibrary eBook collection includes over 54,000 titles. The eBooks on Netlibrary can be viewed online and in some cases downloaded.
The View this eBook option lets you read a full-text book online. Some books have a download option, click Show Details to see if it is available for a book. You will need a NetLibrary login to download books.
Harris County Public Library's has a collection of eBooks accessible through NetLibrary. At the Netlibrary home page perform a title, author, or keyword search. Then click View this eBook, to view online or Show Details for other options.
Online Catalog Access
HCPL's collection of eBooks is also accessible through the online catalog. You will come across eBooks during the regular course of searching. In a list of titles the format column for an eBook will read "[computer file]."
If you would like to get a list of all the eBook titles in the online catalog, perform an "author names" search using "Netlibrary" as the author's name.
Double click on a title to bring up that title's bibliographic record. Click on the "URL" field in the bibliographic record to go to the eBook at the Netlibrary web site.
Downloading an eBook
To download an eBook perform a search on Netlibrary or retrieve it through the online catalog.
- Click on Show Details.
- Click Check Out & Download this eBook
- Login using your NetLibrary login/password
- Click Download this eContent
Creating a Login
A login for Netlibrary allows you to checkout books.
- Go to NetLibrary
- Enter your library card number
- At the top right of the page, you'll see a row of links (My List and Notes, My Check Out....)
- Click "Create a Free Account"
- Fill out all required information. You will need to select a user name and password (we recommend you use your library card number as your login ID).
Once you have an account, you can download books with that option.
How to Log in
Click one of the "Log in" links and enter your user name and password and press the "Login" button.
Reopening a Checked Out Book
To reopen a book you have checked out, log in and go to your "eBookshelf."
