Nook/Sony Reader users: Find out how to read eBooks here. (Newer Adobe Digital Editions 2.x)

A PDF document of these instructions with images is also available.

The first time you download an eBook from the HCPL Digital Media Catalog, there are many steps to do before everything will work properly. You will not have to do these again once they are done and downloading eBook titles will become simple. Please make sure your device is not plugged into your computer at this time.

Getting an Adobe ID – Pre-Software Download Steps

In order to read the eBooks from our digital library on your computer, or to transfer them to a portable device, you will need to install Adobe Digital editions to your computer. Please do not have your device connected to the computer until you are finished installing Adobe Digital Editions.

To properly use this software you will need to have an Adobe ID. You can create this ID later, but I find that it is easier to create it before you download the Adobe Digital Editions software.

Creating an Adobe ID takes only a few seconds and you can create the ID here:

Click the “Don’t have an Adobe ID” link just below the “sign in” button to begin the process.

Fill in the fields listed and select “create.” If you do not wish to receive junk mail from Adobe, unselect the check box before hitting “create.”

If you already have an Adobe ID, then you can skip the ID creation step. You can also create the ID when you open Adobe Digital Editions for the first time, but again, I find it easier to create the Adobe ID before you install Adobe Digital Editions.

Installing Adobe Digital Editions

After you have created the Adobe ID, the software you will need to read the EPUB or PDF files can be located here:

On this page, you should see a link that says “Download Now.” It is located toward the upper right.
Selecting “Download Now” will begin the install process. Please follow the steps that come up and save the program into the default folder when it asks you to create a folder for the software. When it asks you what you wish to install, it is helpful to leave the “Desktop Shortcut” option with a checkmark.

After the installation is complete, there should be a shortcut to Adobe Digital Editions on your computers desktop. It looks like a grey square with a burgundy open book in the center.

Double click this to open the program. When you open the program for the first time, it will ask you to activate the program. This is for copyright reasons and it is recommended that you activate the software. To do this, you will need to enter the Adobe ID you previously created. If you did not create it earlier, you can create it at this time.

When you finish activating the software, Adobe Digital Editions is ready to use.

When finished, attempt to download a title if you have one already checkout.

Downloading a Title

To find titles to download to the Nook, please go to the HCPL Digital Media Catalog.

If all you want to do is read eBooks and not listen to the eAudio titles, you will only want to download the EPUB or PDF formats. EPUB will give a better reading experience ona portable device, though. The formats that the titles are in are listed with the title summary.

To listen to MP3 eAudio books, you will need additional software.

If you click on "My Digital Account", you will have access to all your checked out titles and hold titles (it may ask you to login with your library card first).

Clicking on "My eBookshelf" will bring up the titles you have checked out. Clicking on "Holds" lists the titles you have on hold.

If you have a title checked out, it should list that title in your "eBookshelf" with a grey button that says "Download" next to it.

The way it should work is that, when you click “download”, it may ask you if you want to create a folder for the title. Click “yes” to continue. If it asks you if you want to “open” or “save” the title, click “open”. It only asks you to do this on some computers and it may not happen with you.

Adobe Digital Editions should automatically open when the download starts. It may look like nothing is happening, but after a few seconds you should start to see the title downloading in the Adobe Digital Editions program.

When you download a title into Adobe Digital Editions, you will be in Reading view. This will be the mode you are in when you are actually reading the eBook.

In the upper left hand side of the window you should see the word “Library.” Select this to see your bookshelf. You will have access to all your titles here. They will appear as book jackets.

If you double click the book jacket of the title you want to read, the title will open and you will be able to read it. Please note that there is also a small book jacket in the upper left of the last title read. This is not the book jacket you double click to open, nor to transfer to a Nook or Sony Reader.

Turning in Titles Early

To return an eBook early, you will need to use Adobe Digital Editions. First you will need make sure you are not in “Reading View.” You will want to be looking at your bookshelf. If you are in reading view, select the word “Library” in the upper left.

Next, if you move your mouse over the cover of the title you want to return and right click over it.

When you right click over it, a drop down menu will appear. "Return Borrowed Item" is one of the options.

Selecting this will return the item and delete it off your computer, but not any portable reading device that you may have transferred the title to. The title will no longer be checked out to you. The title will automatically be checked in after the checkout time has expired, but you will need to delete the title from the computer using the same triangle you used for returning the item early.

Activating the Device for the First Time

Please make sure Adobe Digital Editions is not open when you start this process.
First you will need to turn on the portable device and connect it to your computer.

After the device syncs with you computer, open the Adobe Digital Editions program with your device still connected.

After it finishes loading, the “device setup assistant” should pop up. The Message in the window should read:

“A mobile device has been detected. To transfer protected items between your Digital Editions library and this device, both the device and the computer must be authorized with the same Adobe ID.
To authorize this device with your Adobe ID -------------, click Authorize Device.”

To authorize the device, click on the brown “Authorize Device” button. Your device should now allow you to transfer eBooks from Adobe Digital Editions.

If it does not ask you to authorize your device and you are not able to transfer titles like described below, please see the topic called “User Not Authorized.”

Transferring from Adobe Digital Editions to Your Device

When you download an eBook, it should automatically be downloaded to Adobe Digital Editions. In order to transfer a title from Adobe Digital Editions to your portable device, you will need to make sure you are not in "Reading View."

If your portable device is connected to your computer, you should see the name (or model number) of the device listed in the left hand frame of the Adobe Digital Editions program. Generally it is the last item listed under the “Bookshelves” heading.

To transfer the title, simply drag and drop the book jacket to the model of your portable device listed in the left hand frame. Again, do not use the bookjacket in the upper left for “Last Read.” The book jacket will be in the main window. This should transfer the title to your reading device for you. It is common for it to only take a few seconds to transfer.

After is it complete, you may close Adobe Digital Editions and disconnect your portable device from the computer.
