Billed as a "true-life novel," Half-Broke Horses chronicles the life of Lily Casey Smith, a woman whose roles in life changed as often as the West Texas weather, ranging from helping her father break and train horses to pull wagons, to teaching school, to working as a maid, to being married to a "crum-bum" bigamist, before finding her place beside Big Jim Smith, with whom she had two children, including Rose Mary, whose life become the focus of "The Glass Castle."
