The relationship between girls isn’t always easy. For Sarah and Hetty, the relationship is complex, to say the least. It is 1803 in Charleston, South Carolina. Sarah Grimké has just turned eleven and her mother is determined to give her a present. The gift, though, happens to be a ten-year-old slave named Hetty (or Handful, if you ask her). Unable to refuse the “gift” or to free her, Sarah and Hetty forge an unsteady friendship that will be tested and tried again and again. In her novel, “The Invention of Wings,” Sue Monk Kidd lets each tell their story in alternating chapters.
The North Channel Book Club will discuss “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd, on Wednesday, August 27th at 10 am in the meeting room. Titles are available for checkout by the front desk.
