A Smile As Big As The Moon

“The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”  --Albert Einstein

They weren't supposed to succeed.  They were the rejected and outcast students of their high school.  But they had a secret weapon: their teachers, Mike Kersjes and Robynn McKinney, who believed that they could do anything. Even go to Space Camp where the best and brightest students competed in activities similar to those experienced by NASA astronauts.  Kersjes and McKinney knew that their kids could rise to the challenge if only given the chance.

In "A Smile As Big As The Moon," Kersjes details the journey that his class embarks on to achieve the goal of being the first Special Education class to attend Space Camp.  The inspiring account is all at once funny, sad, and uplifting.

The North Channel Branch Library Book Club will be discussing "A Smile As Big As The Moon" by Mike Kersjes and Joe Layton on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 10 am in the meeting room.

Next month, the book selection will be "Prairie Tale" by Melissa Gilbert.
