Northwest Library is now on Facebook and Twitter!
We live in the age of the internet, and it is difficult to imagine a point in the future where there will be fewer people utilizing the World Wide Web, for both their entertainment and informational needs, than there are today. Over time, internet and social media usage will only become more ubiquitous.
As purveyors of both information and culture, it is the responsibility of libraries not to compete with, but to embrace the digital age, to use new technologies to complement, and strengthen, the services that they provide their community.
Embracing commonly-used social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr) is essential. Through these mediums, a library is able to make its message, values, policies, and events publicly and universally available, in turn making itself more accessible to both its established and its potential community of users, and in widely varying manners.
The community should also be able to count on its information professionals to help it navigate the information superhighway: to help it find what it is looking for, and to introduce it to things it didn’t know existed. That’s what I hope to accomplish through Facebook’s and Twitter’s channels, and I hope you’ll join me for the ride.
