Read Aloud & Proud! Read Across America @ your Library

March is Read Aloud Month and what better way to kick it off than a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday with the NEA’s annual Read Across America. All 26 Harris County Public Library branches will be having special Seussian story times to encourage all children to celebrate the pleasures of reading all year long!

Read Aloud Month encourages parents to read to their children for at least fifteen minutes every day starting at birth. Why is this important? Because study after study has shown its lifelong benefits:

  • Reading aloud to your child spurs language-development (even before they talk);
  • it greatly increases your child’s working vocabulary;
  • it builds listening skills, curiosity and memory-development;
  • it helps children better cope with stress;
  • it gives children a positive association with reading which in turn makes it more likely that they will read for pleasure throughout their lives.
  • Children and teens who read for pleasure have a much better chance of success in school;
  • Adults who read for pleasure tend to have better paying jobs, and lead happier, more productive lives.

Those are the facts, but perhaps the best reason to read aloud with your child early and often is that it is just plain enjoyable for both of you. It is wonderful together-time, it naturally fosters communication between you both. In short, it helps you grow together.

We know that in this harried, hurry-up world, it is not always possible to carve out even a short fifteen minutes every day, the good news is that audiobooks are an alternative that allow you and your child to listen together while you're running errands, cooking dinner, or getting ready for school.

Join your friends at HCPL for our Read Across America celebrations, and all year long for story times and other early literacy programs. Check your branch's events calendar.for dates and details.
