Ruby Dee (1922-2014)

It was very sad to read about the passing of one of America’s great actresses: Ruby Dee.  She was a renowned star of Broadway, movies, and television.  But her talent did not end there.  She was a journalist, a playwright, a poet.  She also devoted her talent, time, and energy to the civil rights movement, playing a major role in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963.  And with her husband Ossie Davis, Dee was part of one of the great acting teams in entertainment.

Dee’s marriage to Davis lasted from 1948 until his death in 2005.  But during those years, they gave us memorable performances, both together and separately.  They collaborated on two books – With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together and My One Good Nerve.  We lost Ossie Davis nine years ago, and we’ve now lost Ruby Dee.  Both treasures in the world of acting.

If you’re unfamiliar with Dee’s work, or if you’d like to rewatch a favorite performance or read her books, check out the titles below and others in our catalog.  The movies also featuring Ossie Davis are starred.
