Swedish inspector Kurt Wallander is called out to a farm where a young girl has been seen hiding in the field. He is stunned when she sets herself on fire. While he is dealing with the aftermath of that, a former justice minister is found murdered and scalped. Soon he and his team are searching for a serial killer who has murdered four men, seemingly unconnected with each other. Like Mankell’s other novels, Sidetracked is very character driven so the reader becomes intimately acquainted with each of the characters, especially Wallander. This title won Best Crime Novel of the Year in Sweden and it is well worth reading.
