Summer Reading 2017 Has Begun!

Harris County Public Library's Summer Reading Program is underway! This year's theme is “Build a Better World," and whether you choose to do that by learning about organic gardening, volunteering in your community, or simply by making your little corner of the world better by reading the books you have not had time for, it will help you build points toward cool, new incentives.

We have made it easier than ever for you and your whole family to log your reading and activities, to write reviews of what you have read and find great recommendations for what to read next. Along the way, we will have challenges to help you earn more points.

for Summer Reading

This summer, for the first time, everyone--babies, kids, teens and adults--who complete the program will get a book of their choosing as a prize. Also for the first time, all adults and teens who reach the point totals will be entered in drawings for a chance to win awesome prize packs that include tickets to the Texas Renaissance Festival, a 3-month family membership to YMCA, a Kindle Fire and more!

As always, there will plenty of programs for every age group to spark curiosity and boost creativity at all HCPL branches. Below are just a few of the highlights.

For Kids
• Museum of Fine Arts Houston Art Camp
• Houston Ballet presents Dance to Learn, a program that uses movement to teach academic concepts
• Book Bash Touring Productions presents Chicken Big, a play based on the beloved kids’ book by Keith Graves
For Teens
• TinkerCAD
• Mindstorm Robotics
• Building a Better French Fry
For Adults
• Organic Gardening
• You be the Gumshoe Murder Mystery Night
• Writers Workshops

All programs are free and open to the public. For complete listings of programs at your HCPL branch, visit the Events Calendar.

At HCPL, we believe reading puts you on the path to building a better world in both large and small ways, but no one said there can't be a whole lot of summer fun along the way. Join us! Register now!

All branches should have

All branches should have books for all age levels on hand, but tomorrow, Saturday, August 19, is the last day you can pick up your prize. So hurry!

If, for some, reason, your branch doesn't have books available, please let me know.

Thanks for writing to us.

I really hate that the

I really hate that the program is online only this year. I'm doing the program with a pre-school aged kid, and it's very inconvenient to have to log online after doing our reading. Especially when we are trying to limit overall screen time. This will be a big barrier for the families that could benefit the most who might not have internet access at home. Please consider a paper option next year, at least for the younger ages.

We are so glad you reached

We are so glad you reached out to us. Paper logs are available at all of our branches. If you don’t see them the next time you visit, please ask any staff member and they will be happy to get them for you. We hope you and your child have time this summer to attend some of our Summer Reading programs at your branch. They help to reinforce all the great reading habits you are building together. We’re sorry for the miscommunication.

Have you tried the BookMyne app? It has both Android and iOS versions. With it, you can search the catalog, download items, manage your account(s), and find suggested reading. Thanks for the question!

I use BookMyne weekly! I absolutely love the app on my phone. I have three children that are always looking for books and I can use the app to see if they are available before I drive into town. The only problem is I am unable to download to my ipad. Do you know if it is available for Ipad users?

The BookMyne app page in the

The BookMyne app page in the Apple App Store says, "Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch." Is it possible you're running an older version of the iOS?

I truly honestly hated the new hosting website the minute I looked at it. To be perfectly honest, the best thing about the hcpl online summer reading program to me has been the ability to connect with other readers, and this new program completely ignores any sort of aspect and makes reading a drab, solely rewards-based system that's honestly quite disappointing. :/

We understand your

We understand your frustration and appreciate your honesty. Due to the ever-increasing number of participants in our Summer Reading Program, we just outgrew the old system and the new system is still a work-in-progress. We hope to include features that allow summer readers to connect more easily with one another. We thank you for your feedback.

I completely agree that the community feature was the biggest benefit to participating in SRP in the past. I really liked being able to see what other people were reading and I appreciated their reviews.

I had the same reaction: I like the community part of it. I'll still use it. I don't hate it; I like the rewards. But connecting with other readers was the best part. Also, I've been unable to access the site today. It appears to be a problem with the security setup: "The owner of has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website. This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Firefox may only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate"

My apologies for the delayed response. We contacted our vendor, but have not heard back from them yet. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will keep you posted.
