Summer Reading Program fun starts Thursday in Children's Department
On Thursday, the Children's Department kicks off the 2014 Summer Reading Program in style. When we open at 1 pm, we will have a registration table where volunteers will help children and parents sign up for the Summer Reading Program. Children of all ages (including babies) will get in on the fun of reading this summer. Babies through 18 months will get to do 10 activities to get a certificate and a free book or bib; children from toddler age on up can read or have a parent read (for younger children) 10 books to get a certificate and a free book to keep. For upper elementary readers, they might want to read 500 pages or 500 minutes to get a certificate and a free book. For each 10 books or 500 minutes/pages, the child will get a paper footprint to write their name on so that we can display it throughout the Children 's Department this summer. Children who read 50 books or 2500 pages/minutes will get a ribbon to show what a great reader they've been over the summer.
In addition to our year-round storytimes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers, we will have special Thursday afternoon programs at 2:30 & 3:30 pm starting Thursday. These programs require tickets. The tickets are free and given out 30 minutes before the program. Our summer programs tend to be well-attended, so we suggest that children and their adult arrive 15-20 minutes before the time that tickets are scheduled to be given out. To start children off right with the reading habit, we will have a tote bag decorating program on Thursday, June 5. This program is recommended for children 3 years and older. Here are our other programs this month: June 12 - Drummer Mark Shelton demonstrates drums and other percussion instruments. Recommended for children 5 years and older. June 19 - Geebo the Clown - brings magic, bubbles, and cute animals to amaze the audience. This program is recommended for children 4 years and older. June 26 - Jungle Jim - brings an assortment of amazing bugs for children to see with lots of fun facts. This program recommended for children 5 years and above.
We also will have special programs for tweens 8-12 years old on Monday and Tuesday afternoons at 1:30. The Monday programs are in the Children's Activity Space and the Tuesday programs will be in the Meeting Room or Front Porch. The Monday programs require a free ticket to be given out 30 minutes before the program. The Tuesday programs normally don't require a ticket except for June 17. Tickets for this program will be given out at the Kids Information Desk starting 30 minutes before the program.
The Chess Club starts up for the summer on Monday, June 9 at 6:30 pm. This program is recommended for children 6-12 years old of all skill levels. Tickets for program are given out 30 minutes before the program at the Kids Information Desk.
We will have the LEGO Robotics Camp for children 7-11 years old on four Saturdays starting July 12 through August 2. Due to space limitations, we have a drawing for spots for this program. Starting Saturday, June 14 and running for a week through June 21, we will have box at the Kids Information Desk where children can register for the drawing. Children whose names have been drawn will be notified by Friday, June 27.
The summer Thursday afternoon programs along with many other programs are supported by the generous donations of the Friends of Freeman Library. Please support the great work of the Friends of Freeman by visiting the bookstore right as you enter Freeman Library on the right hand side.
