Today in History: The Mayflower

map of cape codOn September 6, 1620, the Mayflower began its voyage from England to the Americas. It sailed for 66 days with over 100 people on board across the stormy Atlantic Ocean. The Pilgrims arrived in Cape Cod on November 11, 1620 and sailed along the coast to an area where they would found the town of Plymouth. The town was not established enough to have people live in it until March of 1621. During the construction of the town, the Pilgrims worked during the day on land but lived on the Mayflower at night. These founders underwent hardship and suffering all in the name of religious freedom and the opportunity to spread Christianity to the New World with the King of England, King James's permission .
