Winter Chillers

As we settle in for another round of chilly temperatures here in Houston, I’m trying to imagine what it must be like for our family and friends in the North.  But my imagination falls short.  I really can’t fathom living and working in an environment where I’d have to face snowdrifts and icicles on a daily basis – much less driving in minus 0 weather.

And those musings led me to think about movies set in those climes.  And if we’re talking about cold weather, why not concentrate on those films that might send a chill down the spine – whether in summer or winter.  Or maybe just make you glad you live in southeast Texas.  Some of my favorites are listed below.  I’ll bet you find some of yours, too.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004) – Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum
Defiance (2008) – Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell
Dreamcatcher (2003) – Morgan Freeman, Damian Lewis, Jason Lee, Thomas Jane, Tim Olyphant
Fargo (1996) – Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) – Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) – Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig
The Grey (2011) – Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, James Badge Dale
Misery (1990) – Kathy Bates, James Caan
The Shining (1980) – Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd
The Thing (1982) – Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, Keith David
The Thing (2011) -- Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead
TransSiberian (2008) – Woody Harrelson, Emily Mortimer, Kate Mara
Whiteout (2009) – Kate Beckinsale, Gabriel Macht, Columbus Short, Tom Skerritt, Alex O'Loughlin
Winter’s Bone (2010) – Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes

So hunker down with some popcorn and hot chocolate or maybe a bowl of soup or chili – and enjoy some winter chillers and thrillers.
