Read the Movie

There's a whole slew of movies at the theater right now - or coming soon - that are based on books.

- The Golden Compass is the first of a possible movie trilogy based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series, the first of which is The Golden Compass.

- Many people read Beowulf in school. The latest movie version is in 3D IMAX. In addition to the book, we also have previous movie versions.

- Texas author, Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men is set on the Texas/Mexico border. The movie stars Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin.

- Stephen King's The Mist is a novella in his 1985 collection Skeleton Crew.

- I Am Legend, starring Will Smith, is based on the book by Richard Matheson about a lone survivor in a world overrun by vampires.

- Charlie Wilson's War is George Crile's account of Charlie Wilson's, an east-Texas Congressman, role in getting military aid to Afghan rebels in the late 80s. The movie stars Tom Hanks and Julie Roberts - as Houston socialite Joanne Herring.

Not every movie has it's origin in books. Disney's Enchanted, while not based on any particular movie, is a gentle spoof of Disney princess movies such as Cinderella and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
