Please note, standard Kindles and touch screen Kindles users will need to use a computer to check out Kindle library eBook titles. Kindle fire and Kindle app users can checkout and download using just the device.
1. Go to the HCPL Digital Media Catalog.
2. Either find a title that is checked in or check out a title you have on hold or in your cart.
3. You will see multiple formats for the eBook listed. The one for Kindle should be first. Click the link for “Add to Cart” to the right of the words “Kindle Book.”
4. Click on the link that says “Proceed to Checkout” to continue to check the title out.
5. If you are not currently signed in, you will be asked to sign in with your library card at this time.
6. On the next screen, you can select to have the book for either 7 days or 14 days. After choosing how long you want the title for, select “Confirm Check Out.” Please note that the title will expire on the Kindle on the due date.
7. To start the download process, select “Get for Kindle.” You will now be taken to Amazon.com, which will supply the book. You will not be charged for the book as it is still a library book.
8. On the Amazon site, you should see a green box towards the upper right. Select the device you wish to download to if you have more than one kindle associated with your Amazon account.
9. Click on the “Get Library Book” icon to continue.
10. You may be asked to log into your Amazon account at this time.
11. If your Kindle has Wi-Fi, your title should now be sent to your Kindle Device. Penguin library eBooks will need to be downloaded and will not be sent over the Wi-Fi. Continue with the instructions to get a Penguin library eBook onto your Kindle.
Please be aware that there are different versions of the Kindle. Some older models only came with a 3G connection. Others only have WI-FI, and some have 3G and WI-FI.
If you are getting the message that your Kindle does not support WI-FI, you may have a model that has 3G wireless, but not WI-FI. According to Amazon, “Library books cannot be delivered via a Kindle’s 3G connection.” In order to read the title, you will need to download the title to your computer and transfer it via USB to your Kindle.
If you are getting this message and believe that your Kindle does have Wi-Fi, you will need to contact Amazon for further support.
12. If you are downloading a Penguin library eBook or you do not have Wi-Fi, select “Download Now” to download the title to your computer.
13. Your computer settings may block the initial download of the title to your computer. If they do, a yellow bar may appear at the top of the Amazon window. If this happens, click on the yellow bar and select “Download File.”
15. A new window will appear. It may ask you to either “Open” or “Save”, or it may ask you to “Find” or “Save.” Either way, select “Save.”
16. After selecting “Save” you will be asked to select where to save it. You can make a new folder or save it to a default folder. Please be aware that you will need to remember how to get to the folder where you saved it. I find it easiest to save to the Desktop so it is easy to find.
17. Select “Save” to save the title to your computer.
18. You may get a message stating that windows cannot open the file. If you do, select “Cancel.”
19. Please connect your Kindle to the computer. When you do, the Kindle folder may open up automatically. If it does not, please navigate to this folder by going to “My Computer” and double clicking on the drive for “Kindle”.
20. Next, find the title in the location you saved it to and drag and drop it to the folder called “Documents” in the Kindle folder.
If you are reading on a Kindle fire, you will want to use the “Books” folder instead of the “Documents” folder.
21. Eject the Kindle from the computer and enjoy your book!

Sometimes the library eBook is just is not available in the Kindle format, but it is in the EPUB format. It would be easy if the Overdrive app was available in the Kindle app store, but it is not. To ease this frustration, here are some instructions on how to download and install the Overdrive App onto your Kindle Fire straight from Overdrive. Please note that this only works on the Kindle Fire, not the standard Kindle.
To start the process, please make sure you are on the home screen. The home button is the option in the lower left that looks like a house. In the upper right of the screen, you will see the settings icon. It looks like a star burst or circular gear. Touch this icon.
Select the option that says “More.”
In the next screen, you should see a list of options. Select the option for “Device.” Please note that you may need to scroll the screen up to find it.
In the next screen, select “on” for the option to “Allow Instillation of Applications for Unknown Sources.”
Please remember to set this option back to “off” when finished.
Next it is time to download the app. Go back to the Fire’s home screen. Click on the tab at the top right for “web.”
Type in the following URL. http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/
On the screen, you should see a list of operating systems you can download Overdrive to. Select the circle next to “Android.”
Do not touch where it says “Available in the Android Market.” Select the link below this that says “download OverDrive Media Console for Android from OverDrive.”
After you make this selection, a Window will pop up asking if you agree to the terms and conditions for the Overdrive Media Console. To proceed, select “I Agree” on the bottom of the screen. You may need to scroll down to find the option.
After you do this, you should see a number in the upper left of the kindle fire. Touch this area.
After touching that area, you should see the Overdrive Media Console downloading.
Once the orange bar finishes going to the right, the download will be complete. Touch where is says “ODMediaConsoleSetup Download Complete.”
The next screen will list the permissions the app requires. Click on the word “Install” in the grey area under the permissions.
You should then see a line that says “Installing.”
After it finishes it will say “Install Complete.” Select the option for “Done” at the bottom of the screen.
Press the home button on the fire to go back to the home screen. You should see the icon for the Overdrive Media Console App in your carousel at the top. Touching this icon will start up the app.
Please remember to set the option for “Allow Instillation of Applications for Unknown Sources” back to “Off” again. If you would like instructions on how to set up and use the app now that it is installed, please see these instructions.

On the HCPL Digital Media Catalog, the only eBook format that will work is the “Kindle” format.
You can also listen to “MP3” eAudio titles on the Kindle, but it is not the most user friendly experience.
Because of the various differences in the Kindle models, please refer to the instruction manual to find out the best way to delete titles from the Kindle you have.
Instructions on how to do this can be found here.
