Meet the Children's Staff

Harris County Public Library has 26 branch libraries across the county.  We have over 60 staff members dedicated to serving children in our community.  Let's meet a couple of them!

Miss Connie

Connie Dye is the Children's Librarian at the Kingwood Branch Library.  She has been there 18 years.

What do you like to read?

Fun Stuff.  I like kid and Youg Adult fantasy, humour, and frivolous picture books.  When I read adult books, I read genre fiction almost exclusively.  I am the queen of romance, murder mysteries, and fantasy.  I add a sprinkling of science fiction to keep me honest.  My one absolute rule is that it must end happily.

What was your favorite book when you were a kid?

I had a lot of favourites, but from 3rd to about 7th grade Andrew Lang's Blue Fairy Book and Howard Pyle's The Adventures of Robin Hood were my fallbacks when there was nothing to read, because they were always great.

What are your hobbies?

I read, watch TV and play with my dog.

Do you have any pets?

I am ruled (fortunately he is a benevolent despot) by a charcoal coloured Llasa-poo named Hector, King Dog of the Universe, 18 pounds of terrifying macho muscle, and mama's sweet baby boy.

What do you like best about your job?

I love to find just the right book for someone to read, to find the perfect answers for their questions and projects, and to tell/read stories.

Anything else you want to share about yourself?

In previous lives, I served in military hospitals with the Red Cross, including a tour at Cam Rahn Bay in Vietnam, and was an Air Craft Maintenance Officer for C-130s, C-141s and C-5s in the Air Force.

Miss Juanita

Miss Juanita is the Children's Librarian at the Galena Park Branch Library.   She has been there 13 years.

What do you like to read?

I enjoy reading Anne Rice, Richard Patterson and anything that deals with history.

What was your favorite book when you were a kid?

I really enjoyed Shel Silverstein--all of them.  My fifth grade teacher read us a poem a week and we would have a contest to see who had memorized the poems.  I was the winner of Ikleme, Pickleme, Tickleme Tooo and I almost won for Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out.

What are your hobbies?

I love to scrapbook and to travel.  I've been to Machu Picchu, Spain, Colombia, and of course, Mexico.

Do you have any pets?

I don't have any pets, but I do have a doggy door.

What do you like best about your job?

I enjoy planning and participating in the programs for the Summer Reading Program and throughout the year.  I also enjoy doing school visits.
