2008 Summer Reading Program

Notable Children's Recordings

It's time once again for the Summer Reading Program!  Children earn a certificate by reading 10 books, reading 500 pages or reading for 5 hours this summer.  The theme for 2008 is Texas Reading Club Jubilee:  1958-2008!  Texas Celebrates 50 Years of Reading!   The Reading Program starts on June 6, 2008 and ends on August 9, 2008.

Harris County Public Libraries will be offering many programs including crafts, story times, movies and outside performers like clowns, magicians, and petting zoos.  All programs are free!

For more information about the programs offered at the branch library near you check out their summer calendar of events.

Going on a road trip this summer?

Need audio appropriate  for the whole family?

The 2008 Notable Children's Recordings list has some wonderful recordings that the whole family might enjoy!  Each year the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's recordings to create the Notable Children's Recordings list.

Meet the HCPL Children's Staff

Harris County Public Library has 26 branch libraries across the county.  We have over 60 staff members dedicated to serving children in our community.  Let's meet a couple of them!

Alexandra Corona

Alex is the Family Literacy Specialist for Harris County Public Library.  She has been the Family Literacy Specialist for 5 years.

What do you like to read?

Romance!  I don't have a favorite author--I just read what captures my attention.  I also enjoy reading magazines on fitness topics, about healthy foods and fashion.

What was your favorite book when you were a kid?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are shopping, working out & running and travel.

What was your favorite subject in school?

Math, I have always enjoyed working with numbers and problem solving.  Math can be very challenging and I have always enjoyed things that are stimulating to my brain.

What do you like best about your job?

I like my job because I get to work with children without being in a classroom setting.  I used to be a teacher and I don't missing teaching because I still get to interact with children.

Alex, age 5

Miss Chris

Miss Chris is a Children's Librarian at the Clear Lake City-County Freeman Branch Library.  She has been there for 5 years.

What do you like to read?

I like this quote from Stephenie Meyer, "There are no children's books or adult books--there are only good books and bad books.  Everyone should read the good books."

The last 3 good books that I read were The Luxe by Anna Godbersen, Family Baggage by Monica McInerney and Babymouse, Puppy Love by Jennifer L. Holm.

What was your favorite book when you were a kid?

My favorite books were series books:  Cherry Ames, Trixie Belden and Beany Malone.  I also liked books by Dr. Seuss and Ludwig Bemelmans.

What are you hobbies?

My hobbies include reading, crafts, cooking and traveling with my family...especially to New York City.

Do you have any pets?

I have a black and tan mini dachshund named Chester.  He looks just like the dog in Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats, except he is getting gray around  the snout.

What do you like best about your job?

My favorite days at work are when I am doing or planning my programs, Book Babies and Toddler Time.  I enjoy seeing the children mature and develop as they graduate to the next level of programming from baby to toddler to preschool to school age.

Anything else you want to share about yourself?

My daughter's name is Emily Elizabeth, just like the little girl in the Clifford series by Norman Bridwell.

Miss Chris was a Book Baby!
