Meet the HCPL Children's Staff

Harris County Public Library has 26 branch libraries across the county.  We have over 60 staff members dedicated to serving children in our community.  Let's meet a couple of them!

Miss Jeanette

Miss Jeanette is the Children's Librarian at the Stratford Branch Library.  She has been there for 12 years and has been with the library system for 20 years.

What do you like to read?

I love to read all of the Children's Picture Books.  It helps me choose books for my storytimes but most of all I love to read them because they are colorful, humorous and enjoyable!

What was your favorite book when you were a kid?

When I was little my brother and I heard stories from the Blue Fairy Book read to us by our mom.  They were wonderful fairy tales!  When I got a little older I read Frank Dixon's Hardy Boys series.

What are your hobbies?

I crochet, garden, read and watch the wildlife at my birdfeeder.  I have a picture of a flying squirrel that I took one night recently.

Do you have any pets?

I have an Amazon parrot named Willie Nelson, a golden retriever named Blondie, and a new puppy named Munchkin, a dapple miniature dachsund.  He loves to nibble my chin, nose, fingers, toes...

What do you like best about your job?

I love working with people, that is the best part.  I enjoy entertaining children and helping them with their school projects.

Anything else you want to share about yourself?

I have been married for 38 years and we have 4 wonderful children, two girls and two boys.  We have 4 grandchildren with one on the way and I would have to admit that all of the children in the community as well as my own bring me great joy.

Miss Nancy

Miss Nancy is the Senior Children's Assistant at the Aldine Branch Library.  She has been there for 5 years.

What do you like to read?

I go through phases of what I like to read.  For a while I was reading forensic mysteries such as those written by Patricia Cornwell, Kathy Reichs, etc.  Right now I am reading a lot of Young Adult and Juvenile fantasy.  I just finished Gregor the Overlander series by Suzanne Collins and loved it.  My latest find is The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.  If you like mythology with a modern day twist, this book is a must read!

What was your favorite book when you were a kid?

Although I have always loved fairy tales, the first book I remember falling in love with when I was  a child was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.  My fifth grade teacher read to the class every afternoon and it was one of the books he shared.  After he finished reading it to us I just had to read it myself over and over again.

What are your hobbies?

Some of my hobbies include reading, of course, obedience training my dog, watching movies with my friends and family, and collecting puppets.

Do you have any pets?

I have a very energetic chocolate and white cocker spaniel named Cindy Lou (named after the little girl  from Dr Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas) and two female calico cats, Trip and Patch.

What do you like best about your job?

The thing I like best about my job is spending time with all of the children and families who come into the library for story times and sharing my favorite books.  Getting to use puppets and making up great voices for them is a lot of fun too!

Anything else you want to share about yourself?

Being a Senior Children's Assistant is the best job in the library.  I get to have fun every day reading to children, exploring great books, and playing with puppets along with the help of my assistant, June Taylor.  What could be better than that!
