With the fall season in full swing, it’s time to get in the mood for one of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving. But before the big dinner and catching up with family and friends, I know many of you will be in the same boat as I am – spending a lot of time traveling or running countless errands in order to get ready for the big day.

No matter what your holiday plans are, a cozy audio will keep you feeling warm inside and out as you pass the time. The audios below are only a small sampling of the selection HCPL has to offer in cozy mysteries and fall-themed fiction. What is your favorite thing to listen to when fall comes around? 

OK, I admit it.  I am a bit faint of heart when it comes to scary stories.  But I still enjoy a good mystery this time of year, something that takes me into the Halloween spirit but leaves me able to sleep through the night. 

Here are some choices that are not quite horror but will still send a chill down your spine:

Tooth and Nail by Ian Rankin – a serial killer on the loose in London

I took a road trip recently and listened to The Silent Girl on the way. On a rooftop, Boston PD Det. Jane Rizzoli finds a woman’s body with a slit throat and a severed hand. Upon investigation, the unknown woman’s death seems to be related to a 19 year old Chinatown murder/suicide. Nineteen years ago a cook, Wu Weimin supposedly shot his coworker, three customers, and himself in the Red Phoenix restaurant.  Rizzoli , with the help of a new associate, explores the culture and history of Chinatown to find out what really happened.  I enjoyed this entry in the Rizzoli and Isles series.  The mystery is a bit predictable but the characters are fun.

Every year, book communities across the nation get together to celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week. Created in 1982, Banned Books Week aims to create a discussion about censorship and the value of free, open access to information.
