The Cutting Season

The Man with the Golden Voice

Can we please, please take a moment to talk about the wondrous, amazing voice of  Simon Vance? A rockstar of the audiobook world, this British transplant has narrated everything from Oliver Twist to Ian Fleming's James Bond series to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. His voice has charmed authors and listeners alike – not hard to do when you’ve narrated over 700 titles.

The Anatomist's Apprentice

The Anatomist's ApprenticeThis historical mystery, first in a new series by Tessa Harris, opens with American physician Thomas Silkstone in London, 1780, to study surgery.  Thomas plans to learn and then return to America to practice, but the suspicious death of a libertine nobleman takes him away from bustling London to a country estate, where he will use his medical knowledge – and what we would today call forensic science – to solve a crime.

The Terrors of the Deep Blue Sea

When you read this blog post, you all have to promise me one thing: hum the theme song from Jaws as you continue reading. In case you didn't know  -  it's Shark Week.

What better way to escape from reality than to be swept across the deserts of ancient Egypt, reliving the British Invasion of the 1960's or trapped in the intrigue of a medieval English court?

So far, this summer has been a great one  for historical audio junkies such as myself – seven new historical fiction novels are currently on the NY Times Best Seller List. Need a little help traveling back to another time or place? Check out some of my favorites below:

City of Masks by Daniel Hecht

City of MasksThis paranormal mystery is set in modern-day New Orleans, with flashbacks to the 1970s.  The Beaufortes have a beautiful home in the Garden District but the appearance of a malevolent spirit has driven Lila Beauforte nearly mad.  Though other family members are skeptical, Cree Black, a respected parapsychologist (“ghostbuster”) is brought in to untangle the mess and solve the mystery – turns out there is a murder to be solved as well.  This Southern gothic tale is first in a series by
