Literacy Training at Aldine Library

Help someone gain a skill that they can use in any aspect of life.  Aldine Branch Library is seeking volunteer tutors to help adults improve basic reading and writing.

A training session will take place at the library on Saturday, Feb. 5th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Afterwards, tutors will schedule once or twice weekly meetings with an adult student to work on phonics and word patterns using materials provided by the library.  Tutors also help students meet daily life needs such as reading for work, reading to children, or reading for pleasure or inspiration.

The training workshop is free and there are no requirements to volunteer, other than an interest in reading and three hours per week to help someone learn to read. To register for this workshop, or if you know of an adult who would like to improve his or her reading, please call the Aldine library for more information at 281-445-5560.

Aldine Customers Love Libraries

On Wednesday, February 16th, libraries all over Texas will be traveling to Austin for Legislative Day, and the Aldine Branch wants to bring our customers. Unfortunately, we can't all pile into a car for a roadtrip, but your voice can go. Thanks to the Texas Library Association's efforts Aldine customers can submit an on-line survey that will reach our state officials. Or if you are in the branch you can fill out a Texans Love Libraries notecard that will be delivered in Austin as well. So look for our dropbox when you visit and feel free to ask staff for assistance if needed.

Ms. Cecilia Duarte of Houston Grand Opera was on hand to read “OPERA CAT" by Tess Weaver at the Aldine Library's Bilingual Storytime. Ms. Duarte presented the book through storytelling and song in English and Spanish. The performance was a real treat for the children and parents in attendance.
