Año de la Patria - Year of the Homeland

Mexican Independence Day2010 marks 200 years since the beginning of armed conflict between the people of Mexico and the Spanish colonists for the independence of Mexico. This conflict would not end until August 24, 1821. “El bicentenario” or bicentennial anniversary marks the moment of “El Grito de Dolores.” This occurred on September 15, 1810 and is considered the official declaration of war against the Spanish government. The Jacinto City Library offers various books on the subject and we would love to welcome the public to come and explore one of the defining moments of our neighbors to the South.

Harris County Libraries Serve as Warming Centers

Residents seeking shelter from the frigid temperatures can head to their local library.  All 25 Harris County branch libraries will open at 9 am on Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9 to serve as warming centers for the public. 

Closing hours will vary depending on the branch.

Birth Anniversary of Zora Neale Hurston

January 7th is the birth anniversary of African-American writer Zora Neale Hurston.  Zora was born on January 7, 1891 in Eatonville, FL.  She is one of the most important African-American writers of the 20th century.  Zora also became an integral part ofthe Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s.  During her lifetime, Zora wrote four novels, including the classic Their Eyes Were Watching God that was published in 1937.  Ms. Hurston died on January 28, 1960. 

The Jacinot City Branch Library owns Their Eyes Were Watching God, as well as Every Tongue Got to Confess, What's the Hury Fox in our Juvenile collection, and The Six Fools that is also in our Juvenile collection.  Please stop by our branch and take a look at these books by Ms. Hurston.
