Asteroids!

asteroidsAstronomers have long known asteroid "2012 DA14" will have a close encounter with Earth on February 15, 2013. This large rock with such a technical name weighs 143,000 tons. That is almost as much as 1,430 average sized blue whales! It is also about half a football field long. The big asteroid was predicted to travel 17,200 miles from the Earth's surface, a hair's width by galactic standards. There should be no worries since this asteroid will not hit our beloved planet. However, this should serve as a reminder of how much is actually going on in outer space!

Speaking of outer space, the SETI Instute is having a vote to name two of Pluto's moons. Pluto has 5 moons: Charon, Nix, Hydra, P4, and P5. SETI is asking the public for help in naming P4 and P5 from a list of names from Greek mythology. To vote please click here.
