While searching for Thanksgiving books for our November display, I came across several children’s books which have the poem 'Over the River and Through the Wood' by Lydia Maria Child, about a boy who is going to his grandparents' house for Thanksgiving.
These books brought back childhood memories of singing this song when my family made the long drive to northeast Texas to visit my grandparents.
The poem was published in 1844 in L. Maria Child’s book Flowers for Children, Volume 2, and it was originally called 'A New-England Boy’s Song About Thanksgiving Day'. The author based the poem on her own memories of visiting her grandfather’s house for Thanksgiving. The house of her grandfather still stands in Medford, Massachusetts near the Mystic River.
Note: The information in the previous paragraph is from Over the River and Through the Wood: The New England Song About Thanksgiving Day by L. Maria Child; illustrated by Matt Tavares. This book is also featured in the book jacket displayed above.
