Gulf Coast Reads: The Train to Crystal City

Book Jacket for The Train to Crystal City by Jan Jarboe RussellThe selection for Gulf Coast Reads this year is The Train to Crystal City: FDR’s Secret Prisoner Exchange Program and America’s Only Family Internment Camp During World War II, by Texas author Jan Jarboe Russell. The first non-fiction title chosen for Gulf Coast Reads, this book tells the riveting, poignant story of immigrants to the United States from Japan, Germany and Italy who were held in an internment camp in Crystal City, Texas. Taken from their homes in Cleveland, Los Angeles and other cities across the United States, these immigrants, named “enemy aliens”, were interned along with their American-born children and were held for the purpose of "repatriation" to their countries of origin in exchange for (other) Americans held there.

La Porte Community Library’s Book Discussion of The Train to Crystal City will be held Wednesday, October 12, 10:30 am – 11:30 am, in the Meeting Room of the Library at 600 S. Broadway in La Porte.

The Gulf Coast Reads program for La Porte will be a showing of the movie American Pastime at Monday, October 17, 6 pm - 7:45 pm, in the Library Meeting Room. American Pastime is a film based on a true story of a Japanese-American internment camp in Utah during World War II. The film portrays the prejudice and suspicion that Japanese immigrants and Japanese-Americans were subjected to during World War II. The movie includes actual footage of the Topaz War Relocation Center in Utah that was filmed using a camera smuggled into the camp.

Gulf Coast Reads is an annual reading initiative in which residents of the upper Texas Gulf Coast read or listen to the same book and then join together with other readers to discuss the book and/or attend programs related to the book’s themes.

The Train to Crystal City is available at Harris County Public library in book format, large print, audio CD, eBook, and eAudio. Please stop by to pick up your copy of the book or download a copy to your computer or mobile device. Then come to the exciting programs and book discussions that will be offered for our readers across Harris County!
