Recipe for "Microwave Kale Chips" courtesy of the Children's Garden Club

Children from the Tomball Library Children's Garden Club learned to use Kale grown straight from the garden to create a delicious snack chip just as delicious and much more nutritious than regular potato chips. With no oven in the library the challenge was on to create chips that tasted like they had been baked in the oven, with nothing but a microwave. After much experimentation with various online recipes the following method was finally chosen creating perfectly crisp and crunchy Kale chips that were enjoyed by the children, teen volunteers and staff.  Here is how you can make them at home.

Water-wise Planting

Happy Earth Day, everyone! If you live in the Tomball area, you probably know a heartbreaking scene of dried out trees with the bark falling off them, the carnage of our terrible drought two summers ago. Since I hear rumors of another dry summer this summer, I'm sending you a link to some of our books on water-wise gardening. Spending another summer watching our beloved gardens wither up and die would be too much. We have some lovely solutions for creating beauty in dry Texas summers.

Drive on Thru

On dreary days like today, we know you wish you could have all the benefits of the library without leaving the cozy interior of your car. That’s why we have a drive thru, located on the side of the building near the additional library parking spots. At the drive thru, you can return books, pick up holds, and even pay fines – all without ever getting out of your car! But you don’t have to take my word for it. Check out the awesome silent film members of the amazing circulation staff made and see for yourself what the drive thru can do for you!

The Early Years are Learning Years!

Although we celebrate children every day throughout the year at a children's library, this week (April 14th - 19th) is "officially" designated as ”the week of the young child" In celebration and with HCPL's continued partnership with Houston PBS, we are thrilled to present a special Curious George themed story time on Wednesday, April 17th at 10:30 am! Children in attendance will watch a fun filled DVD episode of Curious George provided by Houston PBS, listen to a story, complete an activity sheet and make a fabulous craft!   This event is FREE and will meet in the Children's Activity Room!
