Battle of the Books - Weeks 3 & 4

lord of the ringsIt may be hard to believe, but we are now four weeks into Battle of the Books! Here’s how weeks three and four went in the epic battle for book dominance. (And, in case you missed it, here’s the blog post for updates on the first two weeks of voting.)

Later this summer in Adult fiction, Lord of the Rings will be battling it out against To Kill a Mockingbird, while A Game of Thrones will go toe to toe with The Help.

In Young Adult fiction, The Maze Runner battles with Beautiful Creatures, while The Perks of Being a Wallflower dukes it out with I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You.

In Children’s fiction, Nancy Drew is up against Chronicles of Narnia, while Matilda must stand against Bridge to Terabithia.

Each week’s winners have been marked on the brackets near the Reference Desk, so stop by to see what we’re voting on this week and what’s still to come! And if your favorite book didn’t make it through the first round, you know what you need to do: VOTE!

Childrens' Movie Day!

Thursday, June 27th, at 3:00 pm, the Children’s Department will be showing the PG rated Disney/Pixar animated movie UP! Faced with having to go to a retirement home, and remembering a promise he made to his wife many years ago, crusty old curmudgeon Carl, takes off in his house [with the help of balloons] to search for a lost land in South America.   Along with an 8 year old stowaway named Russell, the two unlikely "friends" embark on an incredible adventure, where they encounter talking dogs, an evil villain and a rare bird named Kevin. Bring a drink with a lid!  We'll provide the popcorn!

Meet Mystery Author Jane Cleland!

Mark your calendar: Monday, July 1st, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated mystery author Jane K. Cleland will be at LSC-Tomball Community Library to meet with you, talk about her books, and answer your questions. She will also sign your own Jane Cleland books and/or the one you might win as a door prize. All this in a casual environment in Room L 129, with light refreshments.

In case you don't know Cleland's work, she is the author of the Josie Prescott Antiques Mysteries, a traditional 'cozy' mystery series set in New Hampshire in which antiques appraiser Josie Prescott is the sleuth. She also writes short stories, 'noir' plays, and a number of other genres of fiction and non-fiction. Below are the links to the Antiques Mysteries in our collection, and we hope to see you July 1st!
