Summer Reading Program Winner

SRP Winner-Fran ScottFran Scott is the winner of a $50 gift certificate from Amazon.  She successfully completed ReaderNation, and her name was chosen from all the participants at West University Library.  Ms. Scott is a part time Reference Librarian at the Missouri City Library of Fort Bend County.  She obtained her MLS from the University of Denver, and worked in cataloging for the University of Houston for about 5 years, before going on to pursue a career outside of libraries.  She returned to libraries two years ago. Her manager at Missouri City Library encouraged her to take part in all the summer reading programs that were being offered in Houston.  Although she had never visited West University Library prior to winning her gift card, she obtained a library card during her first visit and promised to come back....

Craft program August 10

         If you missed doing some of the crafts we created this summer, you have another chance to decorate a hummingbird feeder or wand, plant a seed, practice origami, make a macaroni necklace and more.  We will have a "leftover" craft program Wednesday August 10  at 3 PM.  Supplies are limited to what is on hand.

Science Quest

    65 children and 44 adults were entertained by Jon Bartell of Science Quest at the final children's event of the summer reading program.  Mr. Jon amazed the audience with all kinds of fun science facts and experiments utilizing everyday household items.  He brought along several of his rescued animals, such as a ferret, hedgehog, parrotlet, tortoise, chichilla and several reptiles.  Children were able to pet the animals and ask questions.

Mr. Jon emphasized that science is all around us and can be fun if we use our imaginations.  He has all sorts of fact sheets, coloring pages and simple experiments on his website www.science-quest.com

Pig out on books

  Daisy the Pig and Farmer Minor entertained 66 children and 42 adults at a program Wednesday.  Everyone helped read a story to Daisy and learned all about her busy life visiting libraries.  Children lined up to have their photos taken hugging Daisy and some even gave her a kiss !
