Welcome Humphrey

Our library has a new member upstairs in the Children's Section.  Humphrey the hamster has taken up residence in the picture book area.  Humphrey is a long-haired, tan colored male hamster who is almost 3 months old.  We're learning his habits and are finding that Humphrey is not as neat a "housekeeper" as our previous friend, Dora, was.  He is active and enjoys racing on his wheel.  Come meet Humphrey and check out some of our books on hamsters.

The Vikings are Coming!

viking shipJoin us at the West University Branch Library on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at 1:00, as the Vikings invade!

Were there really warriors, once upon a time, with horns on their helmets?  Did these warriors have a scary dragon head on their ships?  Learn all about the Vikings (if you dare)...their tales, their history, and their impressive ships.  This family event will feature a performance by the "Little Vikings" choir and a tasty sweet from Denmark.

Following the family program at 3:00 will be a film screening of A Viking Voyage.  Hear the tale of the reconstruction of the Sea Stallion, introduced by a crew member who was part of the voyage, documented by BBC film.

Goodbye Dora

Dora - the library hamster - has died.  She had a happy, eventful life at the library since we adopted her in August 2009.  Dora was around a year old at that time - middle aged for a hamster.  She was a lively spirit, entertained children who stopped by her habitat upstairs and went on several unplanned "walk-abouts" when she accidently got out of her cage.  Dora will be missed by all at the library as well as several ferrets and her friend, Norman, the cat.

West University Lapsit Storytime

We will be having our regularly scheduled lapsit storytime this Wednesday, 10/22/10, at 10:30am.  It is recommended for babies 3-24 months, and features bouncing, clapping, singing, and nursery rhymes.  We hope to see you there!
