No Name Calling Week 2016

Are you aware that "No Name-Calling Week" http://www.glsen.org/nonamecallingweek for 2016 will be observed January 18-22?  This event is celebrated each year in schools across the nation and seeks to create safe schools free of name-calling, bullying and bias. The latest library display is a collection of informational resources concerning the different types of bullying that young people can encounter.  If you would like to learn more about bullying and its effects, please browse the display on your next visit to the library.

Challenge Yourself in 2016

Challenge yourself to read better, harder, or more books in 2016.  The library has a wide selection of books, with something for everyone, and we want 2016 to be a year of great reads, where you discover stories and characters that take you to new places.  Pick up a reading challenge from the popular adult fiction display, or follow one of the links below to get started.  After you choose a challenge, you can get personalized reading recommendations from HCPL's Book Hunters, or by visiting the library.  Oh, and if you're wondering how best to keep track of all the great books you're about to start reading, we highly recommend GoodReads.

Home Improvement Reference Center

Now that 2016 has started, many people are thinking about personal and home improvement projects.  If you are thinking about improving your home, then the library is a good place to find resource materials to help you with those kitchen, bathroom, or other improvement projects.  Please browse our "Home Improvement Reference Center" display on your next visit to the library and checkout some good books to help you.  Happy Reading!

Make a Difference—Volunteer

You can make a huge difference in someone’s life, by volunteering to be an ESL tutor.  Attend one of our upcoming training sessions to learn how to teach English as a Second Language.  You can meet with students once or more per week, at your library, and help them to learn to speak, read, and understand the English language.  To register, contact the literacy coordinator at 713-274-6620.
