Black History Month Displays @ Freeman

February is Black History Month, and here at Freeman we’re lucky enough to benefit from the work of the Gulf Coast Apollo Chapter of Links, Inc. who have created a wonderful display for our lobby entitled “Buffalo Soldiers, An American Legacy”.  Be sure to check it out on your way in or out of the library.

Come up to the 2nd floor and check out the "Faces of Harris County" display which showcases well known African Americans with ties to the Houston area.  We encourage you to add your own bio or that of somebody you’d like to honor to the display.  You’ll also find a list of resources that focus on African American history and genealogy.

Storybook Opera coming in February

Children and families are in for a treat in February when Houston Grand Opera brings two Storybook Opera programs to Freeman Library.  These programs are designed for children of kindergarten through second grade age.  They use music to tell the stories behind two favorite storybooks: Opera Cat by Tess Weaver and Westward Ho, Carlotta by Candace Fleming.

The first program will be Opera Cat on Tuesday, February 1 at 1:30 pm.  Opera Cat is the story of a cat named Alma who loves to sing.  Alma takes center stage on opening night after her mistress, Madame Soso, comes down with laryngitis.
