Barbara Bush Branch Library @ Cypress Creek

The original Cypress Creek Library was built in 1976. It was renovated and rearranged in 1986. In the Fall of 1997, a referendum was passed to provide funds to build a new and larger replacement library adjacent to the existing building. The new facility is named in honor of former First Lady Barbara Bush, who has been a champion of reading and literacy.

The Barbara Bush Library opened to the public on December 18, 2002. It was officially dedicated with a reception in honor of the former first lady on February 7, 2003. Donors who supported the new facility were invited to attend. Since then, Mrs. Bush has visited the library several times to read stories to the children.

The Barbara Bush Library has multiple meetings spaces open to the public. The Earl Elliott Room just off the foyer can seat 80 (fewer if tables are needed). The Robin Bush Room on the first floor is used for children’s activities and story times. The Women’s Council of Realtors conference room on the second floor can accommodate small groups up to 12 people. There are also six private study rooms with computers on the second floor.

Ever since 1973, the very active Cypress Creek Friends of the Library has supported the Library by raising funds to purchase materials to supplement the library's collection, buy special equipment and supplies, fund special children’s programs, and hire additional staff during busy times. Today they do business as the Barbara Bush Library Friends . They are a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations made to the Friends are tax-deductible. The Friends set themselves a $500,000 fundraising goal to supplement the collection of the new library. They now operate a used book store within the libary that is open daily, and they raise funds in this and other ways to improve library programs and services.
