Madonnas of LeningradTitle to Be Discussed: Madonnas of Leningrad, by Debra Dean. Date: Thursday, Feb. 23, 1:30pm, in the Earl Elliott Room. Repeated Friday, Feb. 24, 2:30pm, in the Women's Council of Realtors Conference Room. Summary:  Bit by bit, the ravages of age are eroding Marina's grip on the everyday. An elderly Russian woman now living in America, she cannot hold on to fresh memories, yet her distant past is miraculously preserved in her mind's eye. Vivid images of her youth arise unbidden, carrying her back to the terrible fall of 1941, when she was a tour guide at the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad. Next month's selection: Blood, Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton.

Aftrican-American Read-In

Over a million readers of all ages and ethnic groups across the United States are expected to participate in the twenty-third annual African American Read-In.  The  Barbara Bush Branch Library and the E.B.O.N.Y. organization will join forces as official sponsors of this event locally.  The goal is to make the celebration of African American literacy a traditional part of  Black History Month Activities.

Classic Movie Morning

On Friday, February 3, Classic Movie Morning will show a film from 1946 starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.  "L. A. private eye Philip Marlowe takes on a blackmail case and follows a trail peopled with murderers, pornographers, nightclub rogues and the spoiled rich."  The movie is scheduled to start at 10:00 am in the Earl Elliott Meeting Room on the first floor.  The library is at 6817 Cypresswood Drive in Spring.

Spanish Classes Resume at the Library

Practice your Spanish with our volunteer, Oscar, on Thursdays from 2:00-4:00 PM. 

After a break for the holidays, Oscar is ready to pick up the conversation again this Thursday, January 19. 

The sessions will be held in the WCR Conference Room on the 2nd floor of the library. There is no need to register, just drop in and meet Oscar and the students in his class. The class is free and open to everyone.

Some knowledge of Spanish is helpful. Call 281-376-4610 for more information.

ESL Tutor Training January 17 at the Library

Volunteer Tutor Training for ESL : Tuesday, January 17 from 6:00-8:45 PM

The Barbara Bush Branch Library is seeking volunteer tutors to help non-English speaking adults learn to read, write, and speak English. A training workshop will take place at the library on Tuesday, January 17 from 6:00-8:45 PM. The library is located at 6817 Cypresswood Drive in Spring.

You need not speak another language nor have teaching experience. At the workshop we will introduce you to teaching techniques and materials which will allow you to communicate with non-English speaking students.
