Pumpkin Decorating

This year the library is having our first ever Pumpkin Decorating Contest, and we want you to join in.  So, what exactly is pumpkin decorating? Well, it's like making a Jack-O-Lantern, minus the carving, plus as many craft materials as you like, and all the imagination that you have.  If that's seems like too much math, just check out the included examples, and follow this link, for a Parents Magazine article, filled with no-carve pumpkin ideas for all ages.  You'll find even more Halloween crafting inspiration at the library; you can start browsing the collection, right here.

Digging Old Stuff

Next Saturday, October 22, Kleb Woods Nature Center in Tomball will host their annual "Digging Old Stuff" event. I went a few years ago and thought it was a great outing for a fall weekend. They have live music, blacksmiths, spinners & weavers, candle-making, fabric dyeing, woodworkers, and more. Click here for more information.

Stop Bullying

You can help prevent bullying, by being a part of Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. Not sure where to get started? The library has a special display with helpful books about bullying, and even more materials on the subject of bullying are available in our online catalog. You can follow the link to StopBullying.gov for instant access to resources for kids, teens, parents, educators, and other members of the community. More ways to get involved can be found at the National Bullying Prevention Center.

Reminders about Good Stuff

I just wanted to make sure you don't forget two wonderful services offered by HCPL and Harris County Precinct 4.
First of all, remember that the Fairbanks Library offers free computer classes, including Computer Basics, Beginner Internet, Beginner Email, Beginner and Intermediate Microsoft Word, and Beginner and Intermediate Microsoft Excel, among others. Click here for the class schedule.
Also, if you're age 50 or better, Harris County Precinct 4 offers an outstanding variety of events and excursions. They have recently updated their web site so that you can register online and you can see which excursions still have space available.
These are great opportunities for learning and for fun!

Banned Books Week

Celebrate Banned Books Week, this weekend, by curling up with a banned book.  You might be surprised to find that many well known classics and bestsellers, and quite possibly, some of your own favorite books, have been banned or challenged in libraries within the United States.  We invite you to defend your right to choose what you read, by visiting the library and checking out a book from our display of banned books.
