The staff at the Katy Branch Library wish you a Happy New Year! The library will close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30 and remain closed through Monday, January 2. We look forward to seeing you in the new year on Tuesday, January 3.
This past year at the Katy Library, we have been very excited to participate in the Book Riot Read Harder Challenge. This list has exposed us to books we probably would have never read and even pushed us outside of our reading comfort zone a few times. While looking for books to fulfill each category, we have run across many others to add to our "to-read" pile and it has been fun seeing what others were choosing for themselves. The 2017 Book Riot Read Harder Challenge was released a little over a week ago and we at the branch have been pouring over the categories, trying to find just the right book. We are so excited to begin on January 1st! If you want to participate, head over to Book Riot and check out their 2017 Book Riot Read Harder Challenge.
The Katy Library is one of the oldest in Harris County, started by the Katy Garden Club and housed in private homes in 1921. It later shared space in a grocery and furniture store and then took over the old Katy Fire Department building on 2nd Avenue. When first opened the library only offered 12 hours of service per week. Today, it is open 40 hours a week. The Friends of the Katy Library were organized in 1973 and still play an active role in the library today.
Construction began in 2002 on the current Franz Road location. The grand opening was on Sunday, April 27, 2003. The library reopened for regular business on Monday, April 28, 2003.
