Corn Tortilla and Quesadilla Demonstration

The corn tortilla, with many variants, has been a staple food in North American and Mesoamerican cultures since Pre-Columbian times.  Come celebrate Hispanic Heritage month on Monday, October 12 ,2015 @ 1: 30 pm and learn how to make yellow corn tortillas using Instant yellow corn masa flour.  You will get to use a tortilla press and then cook them on a electric skillet or traditional comal. Once cooked, you can make 2 quesadillas!  We will also have an authentic molcajete, tortilla press and typical food items such as jalapeños, serrano peppers, cilantro, tomatillos and blue corn tortilla chips with salsa on display.  All ingredients will be provided by the Friends of the South Houston Library. 

FREE Online GED Classes!

If you don't have your high school diploma its never too late to get your GED.  The Harris County Department of Education will be offering no-cost online GED classes at the South Houston Branch.  Registration and testing is required and will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 @ 1 pm.  Don't miss this great opportunity to pass the all-new GED test to get the 21st century skills necessary for a better job, college classes, or a new career path.  For more information call the branch at 713-941-2385.

Free Adult Nutrition Classes/Clases de Nutricion Gratuitas para Adultos

Free Adult Nutrition Classes will be provided by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program.  There is no cost, classes are FREE! Each participant will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the 7 classes. Classes start Weds. Sept. 9, 2015 and will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 1:15 pm- 2:15 pm through October 5, 2015.  Registration is required. For more information please call the branch at 713-941-2385.

Teen Shrinky Dinks Craft

Calling all TEENS!!!!

Shrinky Dinks!?!

Come learn what a shrinky dink is and make your own shrinky dink. A shrinky dink involves creativity along with some heat from an oven!  We start off with a regular size piece of art and then put it in the oven and it will  "shrink" to a smaller size, like the picture. Button Making Craft

 Join us on Thursday, August 20, 2015 @ 4 pm in the meeting room for a fun craft!  Come learn how to make your own button badge.  You can bring your own pictures to cut out and make into a button or we will also have plenty of magazine pictures to choose from.  All materials will be provided.  Quantities are limited.  For more information please call the branch at 713-941-2385.
