Pick Up HCPL Items at the Texas Medical Center Library

tmc libraryIt’s not always easy navigating the area around the Texas Medical Center, so HCPL and the TMC Library hope to reduce daily stress for those who work or seek treatment in the Medical Center with the availability of public library items for pick-up and browsing in the TMC Library.

Starting January 3, 2012, Harris County Public Library materials will be available for convenient pickup at the TMC Library location (1133 John Freeman Boulevard).  Simply select the materials you want in the library’s catalog at www.hcpl.net, place a request using your library card, select TMC as the pickup location, and the items will be delivered to the TMC Library.  Once your items arrive, you will receive a notification by e-mail or phone and have one week to pick them up.  If you would just like to browse, the library will have a small collection of books for adults, children and teens available on site.  If you don’t currently have a HCPL library card, you can apply for one online or at the HAM-TMC Library.

Please note that parking is not free at this location.  More information is available through the TMC website.

Harris County Public Library wants us to check out a million eBooks this year!

Today I’m blogging about eBooks--about electronic books and electronic audio books. People know that they can buy electronic books, but how many of your friends know that YOU are reading the free library versions?

The advantages of reading and listening to electronic books are numerous. You can read or listen to them on your favorite electronic device that fits in your bag, pocket, or purse and goes with you everywhere. You can download them any time of day or night from our website. You can read them beside your spouse in bed without keeping him or her awake. You can enjoy the perks of your device, to change the font and font size, adjust the light intensity to your comfort level, bookmark your stopping place, note your favorite passages, and retrieve instant definitions for words that you don’t know. To their detractors, I admit that they don’t feel like a book. But they do feel like joy.

Electronic book lending is burgeoning. OverDrive, the vendor from whom we and many libraries across the U.S. and Canada contract our eBooks, published these amazing statistics about their electronic library book usage in the last year.
As for us, last year, our county library checked out 850,000 eBooks and eAudio books. This year we at Harris County Public Library are inviting you to boost our circulation statistics to one million. Are you with us?!
