Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.  We invite you to stop by our 1st floor lobby display and familiarize yourself with some of these influential people and browse through a sampling of children's literature written by Hispanic authors.

Celebrate Banned Books Week

Check out a banned book! Every year during the last week of September, the American Library Association celebrates the freedom to read. By focusing on efforts across the United States to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws attention to the dangers and harms of censorship.

Tuesday, September 30th at 4:30 pm is Craft Day in the Children's Department!  Children will paint and stamp leaves to make one of a kind book marks, note cards and other assorted items.  This program is FREE and is limited to 15 children.  Required registration begins Monday, September 22nd.   Call 832-559-4235 to register!

Tutors Needed!

We need volunteer English as a Second Language tutors! You may know that we have an ongoing ESL and English literacy program here at the library. Newcomers to our country are paired with community volunteers and have lessons at the library at mutually convenient times. You don't have to speak another language to become a tutor; we provide learning materials, training, and ongoing support for you, and you get the immense satisfaction that comes from having an intense encounter with a person from another culture who is learning to embrace ours. If you're interested in volunteering, call Suellen at 832-559-4220.
