It's National Library Week!

This week is National Library Week! First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country, to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support.

This year’s theme is "Libraries Transform". I’d like to invite you to use this blog to post an experience of how a library anywhere, at any time, transformed your life in some way.

My story happened in a west-coast library back in 1999. We had just returned from two years in New Zealand and our sea freight hadn’t arrived. Bereft of computers, internet, and phone service, we turned to the library to communicate to our friends and relatives that we had arrived safely, and to the businesses we needed to find a new home. That wonderful library transformed our moving trauma and we settled in that area because of it.

The High Island Bus Trip was thrilling

Would you look at these birds! Hundreds of egrets, snowy egrets, rosette spoonbills, and cormorants are mating, building nests, or feeding their young on this amazing south coast island called The Rookery. This was some of the magic our Seniors experienced this week on the Harris County Precinct 4 bus trip to the High Island Bird Sanctuaries. Thanks to a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, they also got to try out iPad Airs as they traveled. Nature and technology, all in one bus trip.

Our next trip will be Thursday, May 5th, and we’ll be going to the Houston Zoo, with lunch at the Spaghetti Warehouse. Registration will be opening soon!

April Art Explorers!

Learn about English book author and illustrator Arthur Rackham and sketch and paint a simple drawing at Art Explorers.  This program meets Monday, April 11th at 1:30 pm and Tuesday, April 12th at 4:30 pm in the Children’s Activity Room.   Registration is required and begins on Monday, April 4th by calling the children’s reference desk at 832-559-4235.  Each session is limited to 20 children (ages 8 - 12).

Farewell, dear Lynn Flanigan

Today, sadly, we say farewell to our Assistant Branch Librarian Children’s Services, Lynn Flanigan. Lynn has been with the Harris County Public Library system for sixteen years and with Tomball Library since the current building opened in 2005. Before that she worked for Houston Public Library. And before that, she was a paralegal. But her first love is children, and she left the legal profession because she felt called to be with kids to share her love of reading, storytelling, and literacy. She’ll be remembered by her staff for allowing them to try out and implement new programs, for reaching out to schools and daycares, and for the way she happily jumped in to help whenever needed. Lynn, we wish you and your husband every good thing in the years ahead, and thank you for your service to the children of Tomball.

Coloring for Adults is Back!

After our last Adult Coloring meeting our participants didn't ask us, "Are you having another class;" they asked us,"When are you having another class?!" We can now answer that question: we're having one at the end of this month.

If you haven't been before, come and discover the joy of adult coloring in a two hour coloring fest at the Tomball Library. If you have been before, here's the spoiler: we'll have pages from "The Official A Game of Thrones Coloring Book". Relax and get lost in this meditative activity. We'll supply felt markers, coloring pencils, and pages to color; but feel free to bring your own as well. That's Thursday, March 31st, from 2-4 pm. In the Meeting Room, Room L-129.
