Can you believe 2012 is almost over? All over the internet you can find Best of 2012 lists covering books, movies, and more. Like you, many library staff enjoy reading comics and this post is dedicated to their favorites for 2012! The list below is a mix of new and old and different age audiences. Sense and Sensibility [2] by Nancy Butler. Butler's adaptation of Jane Austen's novel is considered true to the original story and the illustrations are spectacular! Pick this title if you're in the mood for something classic and romantic.
Amelia Rules!: When the past is a present [3] by Jimmy Gownley. (suitable for children)
Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt [4] by Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco. This title is a mix of bodies text with graphic novel elements; written by Hedges and illustrated by Sacco. Consider reading if you enjoy powerful and serious writing.
Friends with Boys [5] by Faith Erin Hicks.
Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer [6] by Dusty Higgins and Van Jensen.
*Locke and Key [7] by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. If you're in the mood for a bit of horror, intriguing writing, and artful imagery, this one is for you!
Vampire Knight [8] by Matsuri Hino.
Hikaru No Go [9] by Yumi Hotta.
King of Thorn [10] by Yuji Iwahara. One staff member enjoyed this series for it's creepy and what-the-heck factor. Check it out if you like futuristic and fantasy reads!
Walking Dead Compendium 1 & 2 [11] by Robert Kirkman.
Essex County Trilogy [12] by Jeff Lemire.
Kick Ass 2 [13] by Mark Millar and others.
Astronaut Academy [14] by Dave Roman. (suitable for children)
Persepolis [15] by Marjane Satrapi.
Bone [16] by Jeff Smith.
Afterschool Charisma [17] by Kumiko Suekane.
Fruits Basket [18] by Natsuki Takaya. Fruits Basket is an essential manga series that is overall fun and romantic. You will especially love it for its wily cast of zodiac characters!
Smile [19] by Raina Telgemeier. (suitable for children)
20th Century Boys [20] by Naoki Urasawa.
Y the Last Man [21] by Brian K. Vaughan. New to our collection, Y the Last Man series is in the same vein of Walking Dead and other post-apocalyptic series.
*Fables [22] by Bill Willingham. One staffer found this series to be inventive and absorbing; this is a must read if you're looking for hard-to-put-down reads!
