I love Christmas movies. All kinds of Christmas movies. Color. Black & white. Religious. Secular. Live action. Animated. Romantic. Silly. I have certain ones that I have to watch every year. And for the most part, they’re all quite traditional. Christmas is the theme. It influences the people and advances the story.
But in the last couple of years, I’ve started adding a few other films to my list of annual viewing. Movies that skirt around the edges of Christmas. They may be set during the season or the holidays may provide a turning point in the story. Perhaps even driving home a point we didn’t even notice until the end of the movie. But one that stays with us.
Romantic – These are films that are ultimately about finding the right person. Or sometimes the holiday reunites those who have been separated.
All That Heaven Allows
The Apartment
Desk Set
I’ll Be Seeing You
Since You Went Away
More Christmassy Than You Might Think – Movies that tell a familiar story in a different way. Or maybe show how that story changes lives.
3 Godfathers
The Bells of St. Mary’s
Meet John Doe
More for Grown-ups – In case you need something for after the kids go to bed. More grown-up themes with Christmas scenes you’ll remember.
Captain Newman, M.D.
Die Hard
The Lion in Winter
Stalag 17
Have a wonderful holiday and great season’s viewing!
