Lippman has won the Edgar award for her mystery, Charm City . She has received several other awards, and I think she is an excellent writer. I always look forward to her new books. Her latest is And When She Was Good . The heroine is Heloise Lewis, who was introduced in one of Lippman’s short stories, “Scratch a Woman.” Heloise emerged from a damaged childhood, and a life of prostitution to become a suburban madam, running her own escort service catering to the rich and powerful. Her neighbors think she’s just another soccer mom. But her two worlds come dangerously close when another madam in the area is killed. And her dangerous ex-pimp may be coming out of prison. This is a strong character study with a suspenseful plot. I found myself rooting for Heloise to prevail and overcome all the obstacles in her way.
