Of course, you already know that the Gulf Cost Reads selection, The Dog Stars by Peter Heller has much to recommend it. Set in an undetermined near future, it is a story about the age-old struggle between our lesser and our greater selves, against a backdrop of near extinction. Full of rich language, compelling characters, a vivid landscape; it is somewhat surprising that the moguls of Hollywood have not already optioned the rights for a movie. The word via the grapevine, however, is that it is being considered.
In the meantime, if you’re looking for a movie tie-in, we will be showing a film based on another post-apocalyptic survivalist novel about a father and son traversing a wrecked landscape, looking for civilization in the midst of savagery.
The movie will show in our Meeting Room (the one with the ten foot screen) on Thursday, October 17th, at 1:00 pm. Please note that the movie is rated R for some violence, disturbing images and language.
This showing is free and open to the public.
