Gulf Coast Reads is an effort to get as many people as possible in the multi-county, greater Houston area to read the same book during October, so that we’ll all have something in common to talk about. This year’s book is The Dog Stars by Peter Heller. It describes the life of Hig, a small-plane pilot, after a flu pandemic has wiped out most of the population of the planet Earth. We are having two events at the Fairbanks Branch Library in connection with Gulf Coast Reads. On Thursday, October 17, at 4:30, we are hosting a discussion of the book. Everyone is invited to read the book and come and talk about it. Please let us know if you plan on coming. In addition, because, after reading post-apocalyptic books, you can’t deny the value of nonperishable foods, we are sponsoring a food drive for Cypress Assistance Ministries the entire month of October. You are encouraged to drop off donations any time the library is open. A list of suggested items is available here at the library.
