In most cases, my advice would be "drop it and run" if you were about to check out an audio book narrated by the author. Bringing a story to life on the page is much different from hearing a story out loud. There are, however, some glorious notable exceptions:
Frank McCourt had an incredible gift for sharing his stories out loud. He not only reads the books, he sings songs, imitates voices and makes the listener feel as if they are sharing a conversation.
Finally, a certain Children's Librarian I know would kill me if I didn't mention John R. Erickson and his Hank the Cowdog books . Music, laughter and fun for the whole family.
