PBS did an adaption of three of Mr. Mankell's novels, and I became interested in this mystery series as a result. In The Fifth Woman , Kurt Wallander is a troubled, workaholic Swedish police detective. He is called in when a man is found impaled on bamboo stakes. As he and his team try to find the killer, Wallander deals with the death of his father, and the disturbing changes in Swedish society. I enjoyed the Swedish setting and the characters. The mystery was intriguing and kept me guessing, even once I knew the killer's motive. Henning Mankell has written several Wallander novels, as well as general fiction for both adults and children. The Pyramid might be a good one for a starter. Pick up one and see what you think!
