The two subjects in the title of this blog entry have more than a little in common this morning. For the first time in the history of the Academy Awards [2] – 82 years! – a woman won for Best Director. Kathryn Bigelow took home the Oscar for Best Director for The Hurt Locker [3], the drama about a bomb unit in wartime Iraq. The Hurt Locker [3] was also named Best Picture.

[5] The Weight of Water [5] (2000) – A photographer doing research about a murder from the 1870s finds disturbing parallels between her life and the life of a woman involved in the crime. Catherine McCormack and Sean Penn star in this mystery.
[6] K-19: the Widowmaker [6] (2002) – Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson star in this suspense set aboard a USSR nuclear submarine in the early 1960s and what happens when a leak in the cooling system threatens all aboard.
