W. S. Merwin [2] has been named U. S. Poet Laureate [3]. He will replace the outgoing Kay Ryan [4]. He is the author of thirty books of poems, and translator of many more. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry [5] in both 1971 and 2009, and the Academy of American Poets [6]' Tanning Prize, among many other honors.
His early work was deeply influenced by classical mythology, but in the 1960s, he was galvanized by the anti-war movement, and many of his most anthologized poems were written in this period. He currently lives a relatively sedate life in Hawaii where he is active in environmental causes.
