I was born and raised in Colorado, so I’ve experienced more than my share of frigid winters, and even a few major blizzards.
That being said, during certain times of the year, such as the holiday season; I miss feeling the brisk chill of Jack Frost and the crunch of snow beneath my feet. I think that is one of the reasons why I so enjoy sharing books about winter with children.
Below is an assortment of picture books and fingerplays that address this theme. I’ve used many of these items in my family storytime and they are beloved by children of all ages.
If you have something that you would like to share with others, please post your comments at the end if this blog, I would especially love to hear about children's stories concerning their experience with snow.
Chubby Little Snowman
A chubby little snowman had a carrot for a nose
Along came a bunny and what do you suppose?
That hungry little bunny was looking for his lunch...
And he ATE that snowman's nose…nibble, nibble. CRUNCH!
I'm a Little Snowman (Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little snowman short and fat.
Here's my scarf and here's my hat.
When snow is falling come and play,
build a snowman everyday.
I'm a Little Snowflake (Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little snowflake , look at me.
No other snowflake is just like me.
I am so unique, as you can see,
And just as special as I can be!
Way Up High
Way up high In the winter sky,
Two little snowflakes caught my eye.
Down to the ground they fell without a sound.
And before very long, It was snowing all around.
