This weekend, a movie I have been looking forward to for months finally arrives in theaters: Warrior . The story of two estranged brothers meeting in the Mixed Martial Arts arena, Warrior promises to be an intense addition to the inspirational sports movie genre. I always appreciate a good inspirational sports movie, but those featuring fighting are some of my favorites. I can remember watching Jean-Claude Van Damme in Bloodsport on TV repeatedly as a teenager and, to this day, it remains one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies.
Although Warrior features Mixed Martial Arts , a fighting style not seen in many movies, Hollywood seems to have a fondness for boxing movies. Last year’s Oscar nominee, The Fighter , is only the most recent in a long history of quality (or admittedly terrible) boxing movies. I have never picked up a boxing glove or stepped up to a punching bag, but it hardly matters. Boxing movies are about more than boxing. They are about one man, down on his luck and working against the odds to fight his way back to the top. Boxing movies are about the common man, sheer determination and, most importantly, the triumph of the human spirit.
