If the cost of eBooks has you worried you might have to use your Kindle for kindling this winter, or if your credit card balance has turned your eReader into an ePaperweight, help is rolling your way, On Friday, October 28 from 10 AM to 2 PM, the Digital Bookmobile will make a stop on its nationwide tour at the Freeman Branch Library.
The Digital Bookmobile is a community outreach program developed by Overdrive, a leading distributor of digital content, to help public libraries promote downloadable eBooks and audiobooks. Housed in a 74 foot long 18 wheel tractor trailer, the Digital Bookmobile will introduce Harris County Public Library customers to the library’s Digital Media Catalog and the almost 14,000 titles available for download on Kindle, Nook, iPad, Android or other mobile devices.
Convenience and the rapidly expanding list of books available with a library card rather than a credit card are converting more and more diehard ink-and-paper book lovers to eReader fans, but even the most digitally adept can get outsmarted by a smartphone sometimes. The Digital Bookmobile will provide free tech support to those having trouble with their own devices, as well as hands-on experience downloading content from HCPL’s media collection on the Bookmobile’s state-of-the-art computers and mobile devices.
For those who are contemplating the purchase of an eReader, notebook, Apple or Android tablet, but don’t want the pressure of a salesperson hovering over their shoulder, HCPL’s own Technology Petting Zoo will also be available in the computer lab with knowledgeable staff on hand to demonstrate and answer questions.
While their parents and older siblings are learning about the new toys, children can debut their Halloween costumes and enjoy some trick-or-treating in the safety of the library. Treats will be provided by the Friends of the Freeman Library and the JSC Federal Credit Union.
